Not pictured: Square One Organic and Koval Rye Vodkas
I often get asked, "Isn't all vodka made from potatoes?" The answer is no - especially here in Texas where we have a huge supply of corn. Most Texas vodkas are made of corn, some of wheat or a combo of. Still others use grapefruit or black eye peas (more on those at another time). While I love my Texas vodkas, I am a big fan of rye vodkas as well.
Ingredients used in making vodka definitely makes a difference in the taste, realize it or not. While the legal definition of vodka is tasteless, colorless and odorless, that could be farther from the truth. Rye and wheat vodkas are considered premium products and traditionally have come from Poland or Russia although there are some produced in the US. While rye whiskey has a bolder, spicer palette, rye vodka notes are not as bold and offer a lighter pepper finish making them a great choice for mixing in cocktails.
Give these Rye Vodkas a try:
1. Belvedere - Premium category, nutty, sweet, rich and creamy
2. Chopin Rye - Tad spicy, wonderful caraway notes, Polish
3. Koval - Milled onsite, creamy, vanilla. leaving a long peppery sting on the tongue
4. Soebliski - Made in Poland, lemon and honeysuckle notes, velvety good
5. Square One - Silky, orange notes, made in USA, use organic rye
6. Wodka - Crisp citrus notes, soft finish like a sweet marshmallow
7. Wyborowa (Wybo) - Poland product, hint of sweetness, savory
In case you didn't know - I love a good old fashioned - rye whiskey, bitters, sugar, orange peel garnish that's been run around the rim and of course, the Luxardo cherry. Mmm, delicious. I know, I know. It's whiskey, not vodka. What?? I'll admit, I do occasionally cheat on my vodka with whiskey, hence #vodkagirlinawhiskeyworld. But I digress, my point is, because of my love of rye vodka, I find that a rye whiskey is also enjoyable. But not to worry .... vodka is still my love.
