It wouldn't be the holidays without watching some traditional Christmas movies. One of my favorites is The Christmas Carol, which is the story of Scrooge (my fave specifically, is the Bill Murray version in Scrooged). In this tale, he is visited by three spirits - his past, his present and his future - on his journey to save his spirit of Christmas. So in the spirit of the holidays, let's do the same, but with vodka!
1. SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS PAST Somethings never get old, yet we may forget about them because we get caught up in the newest, most popular thing at the moment. Same happen with vodka. With so many choices available now, I personally, like to explore and experiment with them all! One of those classics is Seagram's Vodka - American made, 5x distilled and perfect for those holiday cocktails. 2. SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS PRESENT So many brands can come under this category and more are coming on as you read this. But some of my favorites are a few of the most innovative and that would have to be the hemp vodka brands. Some are made from the seed, some from oil or bud and luckily for me, most are made right here in Texas! Check out Dank Vodka (made with terpenes), Highway Vodka (made from hemp & corn), Dr. Stoners (name says it all! small batch, made from "special" fresh herbs) to name a few. I've found these are a little spicier, almost like a rye vodka. 3. SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS FUTURE Coming soon to the market is a brand from the Casa Lumbre Spirits collection called The Community Spirit Co. It's purpose is to give back by partnering with communities - the first being one of those hit hardest by the pandemic - Hospitality. While other brands have been doing a percentage of sales, this brand is giving back not only it's proceeds, but via resources to those supporting and/or in said communities. "People Over Everything. Community Over Everything. Look for it soon on the shelves and in the meantime follow them on Instagram and sign the #Project86 Pledge. Blog on this coming soon! So there you have it - I am filled with Christmas Spirit - and it's called VODKA!! Happy Holidays my vodka lovers. IT'S THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR! ... FOR COCKTAILS!!
The world is opening back up again and we are able to get out with friends and family safely. Just in time for the holiday season. I love me some themed drinks, as I'm sure you do as well, so here's a list of my top favorite places in the Austin area to grab yourself some holiday cheer for a festive time. 1. Wonder Bar Located at the Domain, this bar is always evolving, so it's no Wonder (see what I did there?) that they would have Christmas-themed decor that make for THE BEST photo opps. The theme wouldn't be complete without a themed cocktail or two. Which will be your favorite? 2. Miracle on 5th Street The downtown pop-up cocktail bar tradition is back for another year in all it's glory! You'll find them in the Eleanor space, next door to The Roosevelt Room. There's no reservations this year, so if you plan on going know that it's first come, first serve. You can however purchase a Dasher pass which will allow you to cut to the front of the line. Check their calendar online as it is sometimes reserved for a private event. In it's 5th year, you can enjoy this through December 28th. Don't forget to buy your own festive glassware so you can enjoy drinks in them all season long. 3. LaLa's Little Nugget Ever wish you could keep your Christmas decorations up all year long? Well, LaLa's does!! It's an iconic piece of Austin that features Christmas all year long. A staple in the bar scene since 1972, this little dive bar features Jolly Hour from 4-7pm on Monday-Thursday. Cocktails include Santa's shots, warm drinks and cocktails like a Berry Christmas, Grounded Flight, Buddy's Elf Fashioned and the Naughty Nugget. 4. Here Nor There Hidden in the bustle of downtown, this speakeasy recently launched their "The 12 Days of Christmas" cocktail menu. if you've ever been lucky enough to get in, then you know how exquisite these cocktails can be and the holiday menu will be no exception. With names like Nightcap before Christmas, Gingle Berry Gimlet and L.I.I.T Christmas, these drinks will be sure to please. But don't forget, as beautiful and spectacular as they appear, NO photo taking is allowed. 5. Nickel City If you love Miracle, you're going to want to head over to this east side bar for Tiki-themed holiday drinks, complete with matching glassware. Enjoy an island getaway at Sippin' Santa. 6. Kitty Cohen's Celebrate Hanukkah with luscious libations like the Shabbos Spritz. Just don't get as lit as a menorah. 7. Little Brother A little bro told me that they're doing 'Bad Larry" Miracle-type pop up. I don't have much more info so head over and find out. What are some of your favorite holiday drink places? December means the end of the year, holidays and for me, catching up with good friends and taking in some of the fun stuff going on around town. So many memories made, pictures taken and cocktails indulged.
I kicked off the holidays with an impromptu road trip with a girlfriend to New Orleans the week after Thanksgiving. We had no set agenda but did know that we wanted to go to places and see things that we hadn't done before. Our hotel was perfect and located on the edge of the French Quarter. Our first night we went to Celebration in the Oaks where we had Jingle Juice, rode the carousel and ferris wheel (which we could not stop laughing on) and took advantage of the numerous photo opps. We ended up at various bars dancing our way over to Frenchman Street. The next fews days were filled with wonderful food as we explored Magazine Street, shopped on Royal and spent the evening admiring the view from Hot Tin and chatting about spirits with the bar manager at Bayou Bar downstairs. We ended up at secret bars and ate at little dive places and experienced some of the best food and drink ever. The following week was our Annual HoHo lunch and caught up on each others lives over gift exchanges, Chinese food and yummy cocktails. Repeal Day celebrating followed the next day where I spend time with my industry friends and fellow bloggers at the preview of DuMont's Whiskey bar and singing karaoke at The Highball over Jack Daniels cocktails. Week Two we were treated to The Wine Sled - a limo full of girls decked out in our Christmas hats and attire while we visited hill country wineries and bonded over wine, Jingle Juice and much laughter. After a quick trip to San Antonio, I returned in time for our Dress-Up Girls Night Out. We started with bubbles and bites at The Driskill Hotel (which has a FAB happy hour) then went over to The W Hotel to their Grinchmas Bar. We had reservations at the hottest secret bar in downtown Austin and ended with my favorite cocktail there topped with a dehydrated pineapple - tasty and beautiful! The weekend was low key hanging out with My YaYa's - a group of women I've known and loved as family for almost 20 years. We've been through everything together. There's never a dull moment with us and we had a blast at a local winery with the most amazing lake and sunset view, sipping cocktails by the outdoor fireplace snuggled in Christmas jammies and warm blankets, doing the white elephant gift exchange and slumber party. They are my life! I left the YaYa's and went straight to a Women who Whiskey Brunch with some lovely industry gal pals headed by Ms Jen who had a stunning table setting spread, awesome welcome punch and Jack Daniels cocktails paired with scrumptious brunch indulges. Afterwards I checked in to the beautiful Intercontinental Stephen F. Austin hotel and got ready for the annual Austin Food Magazine Friendsmas Party. This is where my fellow bloggers and influencers come together for food, fun and lots of libations. Held in a Hospitality Suite, the food and drink spread was all you would expect with contributions from local eateries, breweries and spirits. There was no shortage of any. Dessert was out on the rooftop deck where we had sweets in a Merry cabana, followed by the after party in the Presidential Suite. Thank you to the J.W. Marriott for their hospitality again this year. Met up with friends who were in town the next day and spent all day doing the holiday pop-ups. We visited Nickel City for Sippin' Santa, The Roosevelt Room and then next door to Miracle on 5th Street. A quick stop in at Academia resulted in another cocktail and preview of their new cocktail menu (More on that shortly!). Week Three I decided I was staying in for a few days until I had to work promos over the weekend. It was crazy with people buying last minute gifts and stocking up their bars for the holidays, but I got to chat with so many cool people who shared their holiday plans with me. Believe it or not, working promos is very rewarding for me - I love meeting new people. Christmas was spent with family. No other way I'd like to spend it. I'm so grateful to have the opportunity to spend so much time with my loved ones consisting of family and friends. I'm looking forward to a quiet New Year's Eve ... only because I'll be resting up for a whirlwind 2019. See photos of these events, food and drinks on my Instagram or Facebook page. How did you spend your month? Wishing you the happiest of remaining 2018 and may your 2019 be all you imagine and desire it to be. Cheers! |
